Pmet Resources (ASX:PMT) entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Mitsui and Microwave Chemical (MWCC) to assess microwave-based electric calcination technology for processing spodumene concentrate from its Shaakichiuwaanaan lithium project in Quebec, according to a Thursday statement by the company.

MWCC will conduct technical trials on 1.5 tonnes of spodumene concentrate at its Osaka pilot facility while Mitsui evaluates development pathways and the project's commercial viability.

Pmet Resources said the initiative supports its downstream strategy by transforming spodumene into higher-value lithium chemicals using Quebec's low-cost renewable hydroelectric power, thereby reducing carbon emissions, transport and logistics costs, shipping volumes, and reliance on offshore processing.
