Cheaper Eggs Cracked Kroger's Sales -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
Jun 19

1221 ET - Egg prices have been coming down after intense inflation earlier this year from bird flu outbreaks. That relief for consumers weighed on Kroger's 1Q results. The grocer says egg deflations was a meaningful, 64 basis point headwind to its identical sales excluding fuel. It also contributed to a decline in Kroger's gross margin rate, which analysts had thought would expand during the quarter. Egg prices are expected to remain low going forward now that the market is in a state of oversupply nationwide. (dean.seal@wsj.com)
