Inghams Group (ASX:ING) moved to a state of heightened biosecurity vigilance to mitigate against any potential risks after Australian authorities confirmed the detection of the H5N1 avian influenza strain in two wild birds found in the Esperance region of Western Australia, according to a Monday Australian bourse filing.

The company said its chicken breeder farms and grower network are located around 690 kilometers to 770 kilometers from Esperance, clarifying that there had been no detection of the the virus in commercial poultry, including Ingham's operations and its supply chain.

The new measures include the implementation of a complete lockdown, preventing all non-essential access, across all of its Western Australia farms and processing operations, per the filing. A regional housing order to allow Western Australia free range poultry to be kept indoors is being sought from the Australian government's chief veterinary officer.
