Shares of Armata Pharmaceuticals were higher after the company received an additional $2.5 million in funding from a Pentagon grant.

The stock gained 5% to $7.21 in premarket trading Tuesday. Through Monday's close, the stock was up 9% this year.

The late clinical-stage biotechnology company said the award now totals $28.7 million and is for the development of Armata's clinical candidate AP-SA02.

AP-SA02 is designed as an adjunct treatment of complicated Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, or Staph infection.

The additional funding is intended to fund activities to support Phase 3 readiness of the treatment.

The money came through the Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium and is managed by the Naval Medical Research Command.
