PC Demand Likely to be Muted as Component Costs Soar

0906 GMT - Demand for PCs could be subdued for the rest of the year, as more than half of surveyed corporate partners report that clients are delaying hardware upgrades, according to research firm Omdia. It notes that global PC shipments declined 3.6% on year to 65.7 million units in the second quarter as surging memory and storage costs pushed retail prices up by 20% to 40%. Early cost spikes already prompted some buyers to pull purchases forward, the research firm says. Omdia also highlights Apple's recent MacBook price increases that reflect a broader industry trend of passing severe component inflation directly to customers. (jie.yang@wsj.com)
