WD-40 reported a higher profit and rising sales in the third quarter, driven by worldwide growth for its flagship multi-use spray product.

The household-products company on Thursday reported a profit of $30.2 million, or $2.24 a share, compared with $21 million, or $1.54 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out a one-time amortization expense, the company reported adjusted earnings of $2.33 a share. Analysts polled by Factset were expecting $1.56 in adjusted per-share earnings.

Sales rose to $195.1 million from $156.9 million a year prior. Analysts were expecting $172.8 million in sales.

Core maintenance product sales rose 26% year over year, the company said.

Shares of WD-40 climbed 12% to $269.06 in after-hours trading, after closing down 2.9% at $239.42. At close, the stock was up 22% this year.

Sales rose 29% in the Americas, 17% in Europe, India, the Middle East, and Africa, and 24% in the Asia-Pacific region. The company's flagship WD-40 Multi-Use Product drove growth in all three regions, the company said.

The company also updated its full-year guidance to reflect the reclassification of its Americas homecare and cleaning brands as assets held for use rather than assets held for sale. That reclassification will add around $12 million in net sales and 17 cents per share in profit for the year, WD-40 said.

WD-40 also narrowed its guidance overall to reflect year-to-date performance, it said. In total, the company now expects net sales excluding the impact of foreign currency fluctuations between $652 million and $667 million, with adjusted earnings of between $6.05 and $6.35 a share.

Analysts expect full-year adjusted earnings of $5.99 a share on $661.6 million in sales.
