PPG Industries' board has raised the company's quarterly dividend by 4.2%, to 74 cents from 71 cents, making it 55 straight years that the paint maker has boosted its payout.

The new quarterly rate, equal to $2.96 a year, represents an annual yield of about 2.5% based on Thursday's trading price of $118.15, up from 2.4%.

The increase maintains PPG's spot in the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index, whose 69 members have paid a higher dividend for at least 25 straight years.

PPG also keeps its spot on the smaller list of dividend kings--those who have boosted their dividends annually for at least half a century. That group currently counts 58 members, according to website Sure Dividend.

The Pittsburgh company said the increased dividend is payable Sept. 11 to shareholders of record Aug. 10.
