The European Union is taking note of the new U.S. tariffs that the Trump administration says are aimed at combating forced labor, a spokesperson for the EU's executive arm said.

The U.S. imposed tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on more than 60 economies on Friday, replacing a temporary 10% global tariff President Trump imposed in February after the Supreme Court said most of his previous global tariffs were unlawful.

The move comes roughly a year after the EU and the U.S. reached a trade agreement, which sees the EU remove tariffs on most U.S. goods, while duties on most EU shipments are capped at 15%.

"The EU notes positively the fact that this outcome is in line with the U.S. tariff commitments agreed under the EU-U.S. Joint Statement," European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill said.

Gill said the decision establishes an all-inclusive 10% tariff for the EU, and reintroduces exemptions for EU exports such as cork and diamonds, as well as those on aircraft, generic medicines and active ingredients.

Gill also said that the decision offers momentum to continue exploring other tariff exemptions.

"We will continue engaging with the U.S. administration to ensure that the U.S. fully complies with its commitments," he said.
