Customers trust Origin with their information, and I apologise for the impact this may cause,” he said.“We are contacting affected customers, offering support and have set up a dedicated contact number and additional resources to help manage our response to this incident.“One of our key priorities is taking action to secure our systems and ensure no further unauthorised access.“We are working with independent cyber experts to support Origin, and that work is continuing alongside the work of authorities.”Origin Energy chief executive Frank Calabria has apologised. Credit: 7NEWSOrigin said the compromised information may include customers’ names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, account details, and the last four digits of credit cards or the last three digits of bank account numbers.The company said incomplete credit card or bank account information could not be used to make purchases or access customer accounts.Be the first to know: Add 7NEWS as your preferred news source on GoogleThe energy giant said it is still investigating how many customers have been affected.The confirmation comes after 7NEWS revealed a person identifying themselves as “John Doe” contacted the newsroom claiming to have stolen the personal information of two million Origin customers on July 17.The individual alleged they had contacted Origin’s board, security team and customer service department before approaching 7NEWS.“Despite my outreach to their board members, security teams, and customer care departments, Origin hasn’t made a public announcement about the breach or responded to negotiate next steps,” the email read. “They’ve shown no interest in resolving it before the data goes public.” 7NEWS got a tip from “John Doe”.
