CSX posted higher profit in its second quarter as revenue rose.
The railroad operator recorded net income of $1 billion, or 54 cents a share, compared with $829 million, or 44 cents a share, a year earlier.
Revenue rose 10% to $3.94 billion, driven by increased fuel surcharge revenue paired with higher volume and pricing across merchandise, intermodal and coal. Analysts polled by FactSet expected $3.89 billion.
Operating income was up 17% to $1.51 billion.
Chief Executive Steve Angel said the company's railroaders were able to successfully manage substantial volume growth while maintaining focus on safety and productivity.
