Toyota Tsusho (TYO:8015) plans to invest 1.2 trillion yen through March 2028 to expand its metal scrap recycling operations, focusing on extracting valuable materials from recycling rather than operating mines, Nikkei Asia reported Thursday, citing Chief Operating Officer Toshihiko Muroi.

The firm is strengthening its India presence by doubling the number of expatriate staff to 100 and expanding its recycling centers, although it faces pressure from informal competitors with lower overhead, the news daily reported.

The company, which handles everything from production to distribution, plans to extend its used-battery recycling operations from Japan into the U.S. and beyond, the publication said.
