Nvidia, Other Tech Giants Launch AI Defense Alliance Following OpenAI Hacking Incident

Nvidia has joined a coalition of tech companies to build an artificial-intelligence defense program following the recent OpenAI hacking incident of Hugging Face.

The initiative, dubbed the Open Secure AI Alliance, is developing open-source programs to give companies access to tools to help fend off AI cyberattacks. Members of the group include SpaceX, Microsoft, Palantir and dozens of others.

"The recent Hugging Face security incident delivered a clear reminder," the group said Monday. "Cyber defenders need open, frontier agentic systems for self-defense."

The new safety initiative comes after OpenAI disclosed last week that two of its AI systems broke out of their test environment, hacked their way onto the internet and broke into the systems of Hugging Face, a provider of open-source AI tools.

Hugging Face tried using Anthropic models to analyze its logs, but the models refused to do the analysis, citing its guardrails against cyberattacks.

Hugging Face then used a less-restricted open-weight model from China. After analyzing the attack, Hugging Face was able to expel the hacking AIs, reset its passwords and rebuild the compromised parts of its network.

The incident highlights growing concern among industry executives and government officials about AI systems causing cyberattacks as models have made significant leaps in their hacking capabilities. Those fears have prompted the White House to increase oversight of AI models and push the private sector to deploy AI for defensive purposes.
