Sysco recorded higher profit and sales in its fiscal fourth quarter, as the company plans to implement an AI-driven savings plan in the new year.

The food distributor on Tuesday posted a profit of $551 million, or $1.15 a share, compared with $531 million, or $1.10 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out certain one-time items, adjusted per-share earnings were $1.53, ahead of the $1.51 anticipated by analysts, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose 5% to $22.12 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast revenue of $21.95 billion.

In Sysco's U.S. foodservice business, sales rose 4.4%, thanks to improvements in brand penetration, mix and supply chain productivity. Internationally, sales rose nearly 7% on higher volume.

Sysco is implementing a new cost-cutting strategy, which it expects to save $100 million in the new fiscal year. The strategy includes using artificial intelligence to improve inventory management and forecasting accuracy, as well as coding efficiency and routing optimization.

Sysco expects sales to increase 6% to 7% in the new fiscal year, with adjusted earnings per share growth of 9% to 11%, interim Chief Financial Officer Brandon Sewell said.
