Credit: 7NEWS.com.auBe the first to know: Add 7NEWS as your preferred news source on GoogleFor owner Jane Jones, that reaction is exactly the point.“Fear is an emotion that we all have,” she told 7NEWS.com.au“Some people love to be scared, some people hate to be scared.”Long before she was sending showgoers screaming through Hollywood Horrors, Jane worked behind the scenes at the Royal Melbourne Show, where she oversaw ride logistics and met her future husband.The pair brought the haunted walkthrough attraction to Australia after a trip to the United States in 2010, filling a gap left by traditional ghost trains. Since then, Hollywood Horrors has become a favourite on the show circuit.To learn from the best, they partnered with a haunted house in Ohio, swapping scare actors and ideas as part of an exchange program shaping the attraction Australians know today.Now, before the Ekka opening day, the focus shifts to training the next generation of scary clowns, evil creatures and decaying zombies.Jane’s right-hand man — proudly introduced as the attraction’s “Hauntertainer”, Sam — helps guide new recruits through character work and scare techniques.Experienced scare actors demonstrate how to stalk silently, when to freeze, and when to explode into action.Then it’s the recruits’ turn. In front of the haunted house, zombies shuffle, creepy clowns prowl and blood-curdling screams echo beneath the Exhibition train station, earning more than a few astonished looks from Ekka workers preparing the showgrounds.Not every prop comes straight from Hollywood. If, at any point during the day, they decide the job isn’t for them, they’re free to walk away. “They’ve got a job to do to scare people, but it is all about safety,” Jane said.“If it’s a family with young kids, perhaps don’t scare them too much.“But if it’s a group of teenagers, yes, absolutely scare them.”Jane agrees dads often make particularly entertaining targets, with their reactions often delighting the rest of the family.Inside the attraction, a hidden backstage maze keeps the monsters one step ahead of unsuspecting visitors.Corridors snake behind the walls, allowing actors to move unseen between scenes and tiny spyholes let them study approaching groups long before they strike.Jane takes 7NEWS.com.au behind the scenes and, even with some of the lights on and no actors lurking in the shadows, the haunted house is still unsettling.Hidden pressure pads trigger eerie sound effects without warning. A sudden blast of air catches unsuspecting visitors off guard.Every room is designed to keep people on edge, even when it appears empty.She stops in front of what looks like an ordinary horror movie poster fixed to the wall.Hidden behind it is just enough room for a scare actor to stand. Tiny spyholes drilled through the wall beside the poster allow them to watch unsuspecting visitors approach and time their scare to perfection.“They’ve got little holes here so they can see exactly when people are coming,” Jane said.At just the right moment, the actor releases a gate latch. The entire panel slams forward with a deafening bang before a bloodied hand or masked face bursts through the opening.Behind the scenes: Tiny spyholes hidden in the wall help scare actors perfect their timing, while a simple gate latch turns an ordinary poster into one of the attraction’s biggest scares. Credit: 7NEWS.com.au“It’s simple,” Jane said with a laugh. “But it works every time.”Asked what still scares her after years in the business, Jane doesn’t hesitate.“A jump scare is always good,” Jane said. “But you really need to be distracted before it comes. Credit: 7NEWS.com.auOne costume remains the performers’ favourite: Leatherface.\nThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre villain chases guests through the final room with a roaring chainsaw and, judging by the reactions outside, leaves a lasting impression.For many of the veteran actors, frightening strangers is only part of the appeal.Behind the monsters is a close-knit crew, with many performers returning year after year.“The best part is probably working with everyone here,” experienced scare actor Tanna said.“It makes it so fun to come to work... everyone is so supportive.”\nOthers describe it as a creative outlet unlike any ordinary job.\n“It’s really fun to see people getting scared and screaming,” Mitch said simply.The work, however, is tougher than many realise.Performers spend up to six hours inside the haunted house each shift, with even longer days once hair, makeup and costumes are factored in.The combination of hot, confined spaces, constant noise, dark themes and staying in character for hours can be physically and mentally demanding, especially when the occasional customer forgets there’s a real person behind the monster. The veterans have plenty of advice for newcomers: drink plenty of water, warm up your voice, stretch before every shift and wear earplugs to protect against hours of screams and booming soundtracks.“Definitely getting in and learning the makeup,” Quincy added. “Masks get way too hot.”Loading TikTok PostBut perhaps the biggest tip is the simplest.“As soon as you put the costume on, you’re a different person.”While the screams are rewarding, Mitch says bringing a character to life is his favourite part. “It’s really great to be creative,” he said.For Tanna, though, it’s the people who make the long hours worthwhile.“The family that you build is quite a surprise,” she said.By night he’s a nightmare.
