Australian Shares Flat; James Hardie Industries Fiscal Q1 Adjusted Earnings, Net Sales Up

Australian shares were flat at market close on Friday as investors await US jobs data that could impact next month's interest rate decision by the Federal Reserve.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index was little changed at 9,263.60.

Overnight on Wall Street, the S&P 500, the Nasdaq Composite, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.2%, 0.1%, and 0.9%, respectively.

Brent crude futures ​rose over 1% to around $83 per barrel, after jumping over 3% ​overnight. Iran is reviewing a draft bill which would bar US and Israeli vessels from transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

On the domestic front, the value of new payments platform transactions in Australia rose nearly 34% year over year to AU$265.8 billion in June, according to new retail payment figures from the Reserve Bank of Australia.

In company news, James Hardie Industries (ASX:JHX) logged $0.36 in adjusted EPS for the fiscal first quarter, compared with $0.32 a year ago. For the three months ended June 30, net sales was $1.47 billion versus $899.9 million previously.

Nick Scali (ASX:NCK) logged AU$0.885 in earnings per share for fiscal year 2026, compared with AU$0.675 a year ago. For the 12 months ended June 30, revenue was AU$516.7 million versus AU$495.3 million previously.

Lastly, Charter Hall Retail REIT (ASX:CQR) logged AU$0.2639 in operating earnings per unit for fiscal year 2026, compared with AU$0.2538 a year ago. For the 12 months ended June 30, revenue was AU$176.9 million versus AU$198 million previously.
