Neonode Q2 2026 earnings: Engineering revenue decline outweighs licensing growth

Neonode (NASDAQ: NEON) reported Q2 2026 revenue from continuing operations of $0.5 million, down 20.4% year over year, while its loss per share widened to $0.13 from $0.12. Higher licensing revenue was outweighed by a sharp decline in non-recurring engineering revenue, and operating cash use increased slightly.

Core earnings data

The quarterly loss from continuing operations widened as lower revenue coincided with a 3.2% increase in operating expenses. Neonode attributed the expense increase mainly to higher advertising and travel costs.

Cash used by operations rose by $0.1 million year over year. The company cited the higher net loss and a smaller reduction in accounts receivable as the main reasons.

Engineering revenue decline outweighed licensing growth

Neonode’s revenue mix moved further toward software licensing, but the increase was not enough to prevent total revenue from declining. License revenue rose 9.2% to $0.4 million, mainly because of new license agreements, while non-recurring engineering revenue fell 81.5% to $36,000 because of fewer project deliveries.

License revenue$0.4 millionUp 9.2%
Non-recurring engineering revenue$36,000Down 81.5%
MultiSensing license revenueNot disclosedMore than fivefold growth

MultiSensing was the clearest area of licensing growth. Management said the increase reflected an automotive customer’s continued production ramp-up and greater adoption of Neonode’s technology. However, the decline in project-based engineering revenue remained large enough to pull total quarterly revenue lower.

Profitability, cash flow, and liquidity

Operating expenses increased despite the revenue decline, contributing to the wider quarterly loss. The figures show that Neonode’s licensing growth has not yet reached a scale sufficient to cover its operating cost base.

For the first six months of 2026, cash used by operations was $4.0 million, compared with $3.1 million in the prior-year period. At June 30, cash and accounts receivable totaled $21.7 million, down $4.1 million from $25.8 million at December 31, 2025. Working capital from continuing operations declined by $3.8 million over the same period to $20.3 million.

The company described its liquidity position as sufficient to support its licensing strategy, but continued operating losses and cash use remain important measures of how much time Neonode has to convert customer evaluations and development work into commercial revenue.

Management’s view

President and CEO Daniel Alexus said Neonode continued its transition toward a more scalable software licensing model. Management highlighted product-development progress for MultiSensing, achievement of performance targets for automotive sensing applications, and ongoing work with automotive manufacturers, tier-one suppliers, and strategic partners.

The company’s stated priorities are to execute existing customer programs, convert evaluations and partner engagements into commercial agreements, and expand in selected growth markets. Neonode did not provide quantitative financial guidance in the supplied results.

Risks investors need to monitor

  • Dependence on licensing conversion: Total revenue declined even as license revenue increased, showing that new agreements and customer production ramps must expand further to offset lower engineering revenue.
  • Volatility in project revenue: The 81.5% decline in non-recurring engineering revenue resulted from fewer project deliveries, indicating that this revenue category can change materially between periods.
  • Ongoing losses and cash use: The quarterly loss widened, while operating cash use reached $4.0 million for the first half of 2026. Continued cash consumption would further reduce available liquidity.
  • Automotive commercialization execution: MultiSensing growth depends in part on customer production ramps and Neonode’s ability to turn discussions with manufacturers, suppliers, and partners into commercial agreements.

Summary

Neonode’s Q2 2026 results showed progress in its shift toward licensing, led by higher license revenue and more than fivefold growth in MultiSensing license revenue. That progress did not offset the drop in engineering revenue, leaving total revenue lower, losses wider, and cash use higher. The next key measure is whether automotive programs and current evaluations translate into enough recurring licensing revenue to narrow the gap between revenue and operating costs.
