Alphabet (GOOGL, GOOG) Google data scientist Demis Hassabis has been holding talks about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence with government officials and lab counterparts about forming a new independent industry safety monitor before he relinquished his role as chief executive of Google DeepMind, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Hassabis has been spending much of his time fine-tuning the idea of a group or organization that would come up with safety guidelines for AI similar to the way the International Atomic Energy Agency oversees nuclear technology, the report said.

Hassabis discussed aspects of the proposal with senior Trump administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios, the Journal reported.

Google did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
