人们熟悉的产业分布图“微笑曲线”看起来像人在微笑。由于位于图正中央的制造业和组装业的附加值总是较低，因此也成为了反映制造业众多的日本企业困境的词语。
然而，变化似乎正在到来。日立制作所下属的智库——日立综合计划研究所（位于东京千代田区）表示，从以2025年为终点、将五年加以平均的图表形态来看，呈现出中间部分上扬、整体呈闭口状这一略显僵硬的表情。
对全球约700家年营业收入超过30亿美元的上市企业（占总数的前20%）进行了调查，分为产业的上游（研发类）、中游（制造业）和下游（信息服务类）三类，并追踪“附加值的CAGR（复合年均增长率）”这一指标。
