House of the Week: a European-Style Compound in California Wine Country

When Frank Mauceri and his wife, Lisa Mauceri, wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of San Francisco a few years ago, they headed north to Sonoma County where they found peace, quiet-and space for Frank's pinball machine collection.

"It's been a lifelong interest and hobby," says Frank, a music attorney who founded now-defunct Smog Veil Records in the 90s. "Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, in the late 70s and 80s, it was just a thing that children did."

In 2022, the couple paid $4.8 million for the home in Santa Rosa, about 50 miles north of San Francisco, plus another $1.4 million for an adjacent, 10.52-acre parcel of land.

The European-style compound has four structures, including a main house and a stone guesthouse that they converted into a gym with a steam sauna. Frank estimates they spent about $200,000 on improvements, including pool repairs, mechanical upgrades, better audiovisual and Wi-Fi.

Home cooking

The kitchen is a hub for the couple, who love to cook. "It's a hobby we share together," says Frank. There is a La Cornue range, two copper sinks and a copper counter top.

Can't-miss features

Vibrant colors are incorporated into the home's plaster walls, including pastel blue and green, marigold yellow and ruby red. The exterior has a grapefruit pink hue.

"It's just very calming because the colors are somewhat muted," Frank says.

Reason for selling?

The Mauceris are planning a move to Los Angeles, where they've always wanted to live. They are also listing the 10.25-acre parcel for $1.6 million.

Market snapshot

The home is located in Savannah Estates, an affluent, guard-gated community about halfway between Glen Ellen and Santa Rosa. With about eight homes, the enclave abuts conservation land and a state park, says Holly Bennett, an agent with Sotheby's International Realty's Wine Country brokerage in Sonoma, Calif. Bennett is co-listing the property with John Farnham of Compass.

A home in the community sold for about $7 million a few years ago, and another is currently listed for $12.85 million. Bennett says the high-end market has been "sluggish" since around 2024, but as Bay Area real estate heats up buyers are looking north.
