当地时间24日，美国副总统万斯在谈及美国与加拿大的贸易谈判时表示，“加拿大最后一刻提出了一堆不合理的要求”“我认为应该达成协议，但我们需要向加拿大总理发出一个响亮而明确的信息：停止占缅因州人民的便宜。停止占美国的便宜。一切都结束了。我们希望贸易政策公平公正。”

万斯称，谈判仍在进行，“美国将力争在贸易中实现公平”。（总台记者 赵淼）

美国总统特朗普7月20日签署多个公告，依据《斯穆特-霍利关税法》第338条款对从加拿大进口的红酒、曲棍球棒和水泥等数百项特定商品加征50%关税。新关税措施原本定于美东时间8月19日开始生效，特朗普8月18日宣布推迟三天征收。此外，美方自去年以来对加拿大钢铝、汽车及木材等加征的关税依然存在。

当地时间8月21日午夜，加拿大总理卡尼表示，已决定暂停与美国的贸易谈判，并召回了谈判团队。8月22日，卡尼发表全国电视讲话，就加美贸易谈判破裂全面阐明加方立场。卡尼宣布，鉴于美国对价值200亿美元的加拿大商品征收50%的关税，加拿大的等额报复性关税计划于9月8日正式生效执行。
