The question now is how AI changes what it means to be a good engineer.\nAI brings a different kind of challenge to engineering: its output can appear convincing even when it requires closer review. A response may look correct at first glance while overlooking important context, an edge case, or a system constraint. That is why curious, questioning engineers are becoming more valuable as AI adoption grows.\nAgoda's AI Developer Report 2025 found that 95% of developers surveyed across Southeast Asia and India use AI weekly. Yet only 43% believe it can currently perform at the level of a mid-level engineer. The gap reflects what engineers have learned through regular use: fluent-sounding output still needs to be checked.\nDemand for AI skills is also growing. ManpowerGroup's 2026 Global Talent Shortage Survey found that AI skills have overtaken traditional engineering and IT capabilities as the hardest skills for employers to find globally. As access to AI tools becomes commonplace, the ability to question their output and stay curious about what they produce is becoming a clear differentiator for engineers.\nWhy curiosity matters, and what it looks like\nThe strongest engineers treat every AI output as a starting point rather than an answer. They use AI to push their own understanding further instead of accepting the first plausible response.\nCuriosity works both ways. Engineers need to give AI the right context and critically assess what it produces. What I see in our engineering teams at Agoda is that engineers remain involved throughout, using their own judgment to decide what fits their system.\nOne example is CodeBuddy, Agoda's internal AI code-review tool. When a developer submits a change that touches code associated with past incidents, CodeBuddy can flag potentially similar patterns and surface relevant bug history, helping engineers avoid repeating earlier mistakes.\nThe tool surfaces useful context, while engineers determine whether the historical pattern is relevant and what action to take before the change reaches production. \nUnderstanding where the effort goes now\nAI has significantly reduced the time required to produce a first draft of code. What it has not removed is the harder work surrounding that code. Engineers still need to determine whether the output solves the right problem. That takes judgment, experience, and the discipline to question what appears on screen.\nThis is why strong technical foundations still matter. Engineers need to understand how systems work so they can recognise when an AI-generated answer is incomplete or unsuitable. Without that depth, a plausible response can easily be mistaken for a reliable one.\nFor early-career engineers, AI can accelerate learning, but only if it is used to build understanding rather than bypass it.\nWhat engineering leaders should look for\nIn hiring, leaders should look at how candidates respond to an imperfect AI-generated solution: what they question, what they test, and which risks they notice. During code reviews, teams can discuss why an AI suggestion was accepted or rejected. \nAs AI becomes standard across engineering teams, access to technology will no longer distinguish one engineer or one organisation from another. The advantage will belong to those who question its output and use it to deepen rather than replace their understanding.\nCuriosity is no longer simply a soft skill.
