The market reaction to President Trump's proposal to give Americans $5,000? Let's see.
Bond yields, already at their highest level in years, ticked higher early Thursday after the president held out the prospect of a dividend payment should Republicans retain control of congress in the midterms. The moves weren't dramatic and probably reflect the continued rise in oil prices, which makes inflation harder to control.
There are several bridges that have to be crossed before Trump's proposal could become a reality. Right now, most analysts and polls predict Democrats will take back the House and have a shot at the Senate. Those odds would have to change before the $5,000 payment could inch closer to reality.
Another hurdle: Trump would have to follow through. He's promised $2,000 checks to low income Americans before, yet the proposals haven't come to fruition. And lastly, Congress would have to go along with it. With inflation and the federal budget deficit both running hot, nearly $1 trillion of additional spending wouldn't be easy to implement.
