Heidelberg Materials said it is closing a French cement plant as part of a restructuring of its European footprint in response to weak construction demand.

The German supplier of building materials said Wednesday that the closure of its site in Ranville in the Normandy region would affect 87 employees. Heidelberg Materials said it has around 49,000 employees in almost 50 countries.

The company said cement volumes suffered a significant decline following weak construction demand in France due to a challenging economy, and that it is restructuring its European production network while making efforts to cut its carbon emissions.
