Credit: 7NEWSThe disease poses a particular threat because it targets Cavendish bananas, which make up more than 95 per cent of Australia’s banana industry, according to QUT researcher Anthony James.When TR4 is detected, infected plants are destroyed and the affected area quarantined.Lowe discovered the disease on his farm, about 140km south of Cairns, four years ago.Be the first to know: Add 7NEWS as your preferred news source on Google“We have continued farming, we have protocols in place to make sure that infected soil or plant material does not go off the farm,” he said.The disease can spread through soil and water, as well as machinery and footwear, making it difficult for growers to contain.Eleven farms in Tully have been infected over the past 11 years, but the disease remains contained to the region.“It’s of prime importance that we keep the disease out of the Innisfail area,” Lowe said.Innisfail grower Shayne Cini has taken stringent biosecurity measures on his farm to try to keep TR4 out.“It’s a significant cost up front and an ongoing cost,” he said. “There is no assistance.”Banana grower Shayne Cini is taking strict biosecurity measures to protect his crops from TR4. Credit: 7NEWSBut consumers will have to wait before the new banana reaches supermarkets.“It’s probably going to take something like three to five years from now before we start to see larger plantings,” James said.The threat comes after Queensland’s banana industry was devastated by Cyclone Yasi in 2011, when prices surged to between $12 and $15 a kilogram.However, another price blowout is unlikely for now. “There’s no issue with supply, especially not related to TR4,” Lowe said.\n\nInstead, cool winter nights have slowed production and pushed prices higher.At Cleveland’s Skippy’s Farmhouse, a fresh produce and gourmet deli store, director Elijah Samualetri said prices had risen significantly.“At the moment we’re paying anywhere from $35 to $40 on a 15 kilo box.
