随着船舶数字化程度不断提高，黑客入侵电子控制系统对海上安全构成的威胁日益受到关注。美国正调查针对石油和天然气运输船的疑似网络攻击事件。
美国海岸警卫队一位发言人在回应关于超大型油轮VL Prosperity号的提问时表示，8月21日，美国海岸警卫队和联邦调查局人员登上一艘未具名的外籍船舶，此前有迹象显示该船网络系统可能遭到黑客入侵。
船舶追踪数据显示，VL Prosperity号于8月底抵达美国得州附近海域后，目前仍停泊在当地海岸外。伊朗半官方的迈赫尔通讯社上月底报道称，这艘此前在埃及装载原油的船只在穿越直布罗陀海峡期间遭遇网络攻击，通讯一度中断30小时。
VL Prosperity号于7月底在埃及西迪·凯里尔装载原油，并于8月底抵达美国墨西哥湾沿岸。
韩国HMM Ocean Service表示，作为VL Prosperity号的安全和技术管理方，公司已获悉美国海岸警卫队允许该船恢复正常运营。该公司称，已建立严格的网络安全防护机制，以确保其管理船舶的安全，目前正等待美国有关部门发布最终调查报告。
船舶导航系统不断改进，使得监测船舶动态以及通过优化航速节省燃料、减少等待时间变得更加容易。但与此同时，这也让船舶更容易受到黑客攻击。黑客一旦入侵系统，可能影响从船舶航行能力到货物安全等各个环节。
