OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Explore Self-Regulatory AI Body

OpenAI is discussing the creation of an AI industry standards body with Anthropic and Google, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

The idea stems from a proposal by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for a self-regulatory body modeled on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, which oversees US brokers, according to the reports. Hassabis called in July for the US to create an organization that would test the most powerful AI systems before public release.

There is no consensus on the plan, the reports said, with Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez accusing dominant AI labs of forming a "cartel" under the guise of safety.

The push for industry standards comes amid growing safety concerns, including warnings from two researchers who recently resigned from major AI labs, one of whom said AI companies were "gambling with our lives."
