Sumitomo Metal Mining (TYO:5713) established Japan's first electric vehicle battery recycling plant in Saijo, Ehime Prefecture, Nikkei Asia reported Saturday.

The new facility, situated within Sumitomo Metal's Toyo Smelter & Refinery complex, can process 10,000 metric tons of used batteries annually, the report said.

Shares of Sumitomo Metal Mining added nearly 2% in recent trade.
