China-backed The Global Times said Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's recent essay to slow artificial intelligence development was really aimed at curbing China's AI progress via tech barriers and regulatory monopolies, preserving U.S. dominance in technology, and shutting China out of global AI governance.

Amodei warned that China's leading in AI would endanger the U.S. and the world, calling for curbs on chips, computing power, and models, according to editorials published Sunday and Monday.

Chinese experts dismissed the claims as inappropriate, hostile and groundless, saying they serve commercial and competitive interests rather than genuine safety concerns, and risk framing AI as a zero-sum geopolitical contest, The Global Times wrote.
