路透华盛顿9月17日 - 美国国务院周四表示，已批准向沙特阿拉伯出售48架F-35“闪电II”隐形战机的军售案。这笔估值243亿美元的军售案还包括49台普惠 RTX.N 发动机，以及通信设备、备件和其他支持物资。目前，沙特正日益卷入中东战事。
若这笔军售最终达成，将标志着美国政策出现重大转变，可能改变中东地区军事力量平衡，并考验华盛顿维护盟友以色列“军事质量优势”(qualitative military edge)的界定。
沙特于2025年初直接向美国总统特朗普提出购买F-35战机的请求。作为美国武器的最大买家，沙特多年来一直寻求采购这款由洛克希德马丁LMT.N 制造的战斗机，以推动空军现代化并应对地区威胁，特别是来自伊朗的威胁。
F-35被视为全球最先进的战斗机。以色列已装备该机型约十年，组建了多个作战中队，至今仍是中东地区唯一拥有这一武器系统的国家。
美国国会的审查可能会对任何F-35军售案构成挑战。 2018年沙特记者卡舒吉遇害后，美国国会议员曾对对沙特军售提出质疑，部分议员至今仍对深化与沙特的军事合作持谨慎态度。
