Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called for tougher safeguards around artificial intelligence while arguing the US can continue to reap its economic benefits, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

Speaking at the AI Horizons summit in Pittsburgh, Shapiro said he has "real concerns" about the technology and rejected President Donald Trump's characterization of AI warnings as a "hoax," according to the report.

Shapiro last month signed an executive order establishing new guardrails for data centers, including local approval requirements, power-use costs and water conservation standards, Bloomberg reported.

His comments come amid renewed debate over the pace and risks of AI development, according to the report.
