HP Inc. Withholds Outlook, Warning PC Sales Will Drop Through 2027

HP Inc. won't issue fiscal-year guidance just yet, citing an industry-wide slump in personal computer unit volumes that it expects to persist through 2027.

The company said in a securities filing Monday that it remains in its "planning period" and consequently isn't issuing guidance for the next fiscal year. That on its own is unsurprising: The phrasing mirrors language from last month's earnings call, when Chief Financial Officer Karen Parkhill said it was too early to provide an outlook.

The impetus appears to be falling PC unit volumes. While HP noted Monday that it remains "premature" to detail its upcoming fiscal year outlook, it projects industry-wide volumes will decline by a mid-single-digit percentage in calendar year 2027 compared to 2026.

The confluence of a memory-chip shortage and soaring costs has forced HP and its peers to sell fewer laptops at higher prices. On the latest earnings call, management noted that rising input costs were exerting near-term pressure on operating margins, particularly within HP's Personal Systems business. The company is slated to update investors on its cost-mitigation efforts in its fiscal fourth-quarter report.

Shares ticked down 0.7% in premarket trading. Futures tracking the S&P 500 index rose just as much.
