Shares of MGM Resorts International slipped after The Wall Street Journal reported that investor Barry Diller has withdrawn his bid to acquire the casino gaming company.

The stock fell 8.9% to $34.50, in after-hours trading Wednesday after the Journal's report. Shares closed down 2.7%, at $37.85, but are up 3.7% year-to-date.

Diller and his firm People Inc. had proposed to acquire the company for $48.30 a share earlier in the summer, giving it a valuation of around $12.4 billion. Diller withdrew the offer on Wednesday, the Journal reported.

The Journal reported in July that MGM had set up a board committee and engaged advisers to consider Diller's offer, but believed that it undervalued the company.

People Inc. has built up a 26% stake in MGM, according to the Journal. People Inc.'s stock is down 1.8%, at $35.33, after hours.
