The previous two, Millennial Lithium and Alpha Lithium, were acquired by Lithium Americas for $400 million and Tecpetrol for $225 million, respectively.\nNEXT will remain involved during the farm-in period of the transaction, aiding Liontown through local knowledge, technical experience and established relationships in Argentina, according to the press release.\nBrine is tried, true and trending\nThis partnership came in part out of Liontown’s desire to branch out into brine, Stevenson told Fastmarkets.\nIt marks the first expansion of Western Australian hard-rock lithium producer Liontown into both South American lithium and the brine sector.\nTony Ottaviano, Liontown’s managing director and chief executive officer, said in the press release: “This transaction gives Liontown a low-cost entry into lithium brine. Brine is one of the two primary sources of the world’s lithium, and this is our first step in building real understanding and capability in it.”\n“Everyone is interested in having [a brine project] in their portfolio,” because brine is “the low-cost, tried and true technology to start a lithium mine,” Stevenson told Fastmarkets.\n“There are a lot of DLE (direct lithium extraction) technologies that have been promised to revolutionize the industry. That’s what I’ve been hearing for ten years, but very few [DLE] projects have come to fruition,” he added.\nArgentina is attracting global investments\nWhile large-scale lithium projects are slated to come online globally in the second half of the decade, Argentina remains a “hot spot” with some of the highest-grade and best projects in the world, Stevenson told Fastmarkets.\n“Argentina is booming right now,” Stevenson said. “It’s a good country to watch in the next six to 12 months.”\nStevenson said increased global interest in Argentine lithium is already apparent through recent investments and mergers and acquisitions, which he expects to continue.\nThe Centenario project, for example, is just north of Eramet’s Centenario-Ratones operation, which plans to expand its current production capacity to up to 150,000 tonnes per annum of lithium carbonate, and east of the Pozuelos-Pastos Grandes project, jointly owned by Lithium Argentina and Ganfeng Lithium, which is targeting production of up to 150,000 tonnes per annum of lithium carbonate.\n“They’ve got a government in place that’s attracting investment, and countries around the world are investing in Argentina,” Stevenson said. “There is money coming in from everywhere, and it’s moving at least half a dozen projects toward production.”\nWhile the current government has attracted investment, Stevenson does not view the strength of Argentina’s lithium industry as beholden to one party or administration.\n“You’re seeing the results of the lithium industry across the country,” he said. “Different towns are booming, money is coming in.
