Market Chatter: Hong Kong Lists Eight ETFs to Tap Mainland Insurer Demand for Overseas Assets

Eight ETFs tracking South Korean chipmakers, US technology companies and Malaysian large caps debuted in Hong Kong on Monday, as asset managers seek to attract mainland insurance funds following a new investment route through the Southbound Stock Connect, Reuters reported Monday.

China's financial regulator last month allowed mainland insurers to invest in Hong Kong-listed ETFs through the scheme, effective Sept. 21. Eligible ETFs must have at least 60% exposure to Hong Kong equities, limiting the range of overseas-focused products available to mainland investors.

Twenty-one ETFs have launched or are scheduled to debut in Hong Kong this month, taking the 2026 total above 50, Reuter reported, citing HKEX data. Demand for the new products remains uncertain amid competition and their required Hong Kong exposure, the report noted.
