Bank of Japan policymakers debated rate hikes at their September meeting, with some favoring further increases to adjust monetary accommodation as inflation neared the 2% target, according to a Summary of Opinions released Thursday.
Members cited upside price risks from import costs, crude oil, and foreign exchange, noting hikes could accelerate if inflation deviates upward.
However, others opposed an immediate hike, pointing to weak private consumption and warning against hasty action. Government representatives also urged the central bank to weigh the cumulative impact of past rate increases.
