US equity indexes closed mixed this week amid pressure from government bond yields, which hit the highest in more than two decades amid soft labor and inflation reports, and Micron Technology's (MU) strong quarterly results failed to ignite a rally.

* The S&P 500 closed at 7,722.72 on Friday, versus 7,736.14 a week ago. The Nasdaq Composite stood at about 27,190.86, compared with 27,054.55 a week earlier. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended at 51,176.96, in contrast with 51,768.93 at the end of last week.

* Technology topped the gainers, while healthcare led decliners.

* The September nonfarm payrolls rose by 29,000, below the 90,000 gain expected. The personal consumption expenditures price index grew 0.3% in August, as expected, and Core PCE rose 0.2%, below the 0.3% forecast.

* Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan (voter) said Friday interest rates need to be raised by another 50 basis points to ease inflation but added that higher yields could do some of the Fed's job. Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson (voter) said Thursday it may take time for the Fed to decide on a further increase following the move higher in September. Traders slashed the probability of a rate increase in October to 22% late Friday from 64% a week earlier, according to the FedWatch tool.

* The 10-year government bond yield jumped 5.1 basis points to 5.29% late Friday, close to its strongest level since 2002. The 30-year rate climbed 3.3 basis points to 5.64%, also near its loftiest level since 2002.

* G7 decided to release 100 million barrels of energy reserves "immediately over 4 months" to help ease price pressures, it said in a statement. The front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil contract traded close to $91.55 per barrel late Friday, versus $92.44 a week ago.

* Micron Technology (MU) reported a year-over-year jump in fiscal Q4 adjusted earnings and revenue, and set out fiscal Q1 guidance above consensus estimates. Still, its shares closed lower this week.
