Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures Down Pre-Bell Monday as Tech Stocks Normalize

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was down 0.1%, and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) fell 0.2% in Monday's premarket activity, as technology stocks fell back after reaching record highs.

US stock futures were down, with S&P 500 Index futures down 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipping 0.2%, and Nasdaq futures losing 0.3% before the start of regular trading.

The nonmanufacturing data from S&P Global is expected at 9:45 am ET and ISM at 10:00 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 1%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was 2.1% higher, Ether ETF (EETH) advanced 1.7%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was flat.

Power Play:

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) was 0.2% higher, the Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund ETF Shares (VDC) increased by 0.7%, and the iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive. The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) lost 0.05%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) was inactive, while the State Street SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) was 0.4% higher.

Tesla (TSLA) shares were down more than 0.4% pre-bell despite closing 4.7% higher at the previous close.

Winners and Losers:

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) retreated 0.3%, the Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was 0.1% lower, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) slipped 0.6%. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 0.3%.

Novo Nordisk (NVO) shares were down more than 1% premarket after the company said the US Food and Drug Administration's review of its biologics license application for denecimig to treat haemophilia A was extended due to ongoing facility remediation activities, with no new timeline provided for regulatory action.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) advanced 0.3%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.6%, while its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), was 0.3% lower.

Wells Fargo (WFC) shares traded up 2% in early-hours activity after Morgan Stanley (MS) upgraded the company to overweight from equalweight with a price target of $102, while analysts polled by FactSet gave the stock an average rating of overweight and a mean price target of $99.23.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI) retreated 0.1%, while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) were inactive.

CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) shares were down 8.9% before the opening bell after the company said it agreed to acquire RXO (RXO) in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $5.8 billion.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) retreated 0.1%, the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 0.01% lower, and the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was up 0.4%. Among semiconductor ETFs, the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) fell by 0.7%.

Qualcomm (QCOM) shares were up over 1.1% in premarket activity after Huawei said it entered into a multi-year patent licensing agreement with the company.

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) was down by 0.6%.

Cenovus Energy (CVE) shares were down more than 1.3% before market open after the company said it agreed to acquire Athabasca Oil at an implied enterprise value of 5.7 billion Canadian dollars ($4 billion).

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated by 1.1% to $90.13 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was up 0.43% to $3.05 per 1 million British Thermal Units. The United States Oil Fund (USO) decreased by 2.2%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 0.3% lower.

Gold futures for November gained by 0.5% to $4,184 an ounce on the Comex. Silver futures gained by 2.3% to $61.80 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was up by 0.2%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose by 1.6%.
