Honda Motor Co. is planning to sell Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s Triton pickup truck under its own brand, with Mitsubishi serving as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), according to sources.
The two Japanese automakers have been exploring collaboration since 2024, and this project will be their first formal agreement. Honda and Mitsubishi aim to further expand collaboration and strengthen the three-way alliance among themselves and Nissan Motor Co.
The Triton is Mitsubishi's best-selling vehicle model, with about 130,000 units sold worldwide in the fiscal year that ended in March 2026. The truck is famous for its rugged ladder-frame architecture, which makes it easy to drive on rough roads even when carrying heavy loads. This feature made it especially popular in emerging markets such as Southeast Asia.
Honda offers no model similar to the Triton. The automaker is now concentrating resources on hybrids in its core North American market, but it is struggling in Southeast Asia, so it aims to recover in the region by selling the Triton under its own brand. Currently, Honda does not use other Japanese companies as OEMs.
