BioAge Labs' (BIOA) shift toward diabetic macular edema and away from cardiovascular disease leaves an uncertain path for its lead drug candidate, BGE-102, UBS Securities said Sunday in a report.
UBS said stepping back from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease reduces BioAge's exposure to what could be a large market and may put the program behind competitors on development timelines. BioAge may revisit the heart-disease indication if future data from other companies strengthen the case, though that isn't its base expectation, the report said.
UBS described BGE-102 as an experimental pill aimed at calming an overactive immune response. The drug may be differentiated because it reaches the central nervous system, lowers interleukin-1, a key inflammation signal, and binds to a distinct site on the NLRP3 protein.
The phase 2 diabetic macular edema readout expected in H2 2027 is the company's main catalyst, the report said.
UBs initiated coverage of BioAge stock with a neutral rating with $8 price target.
