快科技10月24日消息，近日，美国核聚变初创企业Marathon Fusion对外公布重磅实验成果。
他们宣称借助核聚变产生的高能中子轰击汞，通过核嬗变技术，把水银（汞）转化为稳定的黄金，转化速率达到欧洲核子研究中心CERN此前纪录的10倍，让流传千年的“炼金术”从传说走进实验室。
注：欧洲核子研究中心（CERN）的ALICE团队测量了大型强子对撞机（LHC）2015年至2018年运行期间产生的约29皮克金，这些金原子核来自4个实验，并在不到一秒的时间内分解。
这套技术和古代炼金术完全不同，不属于化学反应，而是直接改变原子核结构。
实验选用汞-198作为原料，原子核吸收中子后发生转变，生成放射性汞-197，再经过电子俘获衰变，最终形成稳定的金-197，也就是自然界里唯一稳定的黄金同位素。
公司同时透露，还完成了高性能等离子体离心机同位素富集测试，正在旧金山搭建新一代聚变设备，长远设想未来聚变电站可同步量产贵金属、医用同位素。
这家2023年成立于旧金山的公司，投资方包含比尔·盖茨旗下Breakthrough Energy以及英美资源集团，主业是研发聚变装置与医用同位素生产，“造黄金”只是其核嬗变技术的一个演示方向。
但需要说明的是，该成果目前仅为企业单方面声明，尚未经过第三方独立复核，同时有业内人士表示，核嬗变改变元素本身在物理理论上早已成立，早年实验室就实现过，但难点始终是提升产率、控制辐射。
